The hydration crystals are re-hydrated with water and given to roaches and other small creatures that drink water but may drown in water. These are the large granules, the smaller size granules tend to be slimy. To re-hydrate crystals, add more water than needed then drain off extra water. This will ensure that they are fully hydrated. They end up around 1/2 to 3/4 inch in size.
